Florida – Fort Lauderdale turning off some beach street lights to protect turtles – Sun-Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE — Street lights along most of the west side of State Road A1A will be turned off this week because their shielding is not doing enough to stop the lighting from disorienting baby sea turtles on the beach.

The lights will stay off until the end of turtle nesting season in November, city officials said. On the east side of A1A, turtle-friendly street lights installed by the city during the past year as part of a $ 2 million project will remain lit at night….Read Entire Article Here
